Equipment Recycling

An Easy Way to Feel Good About Yourself for a Few Minutes

Some time ago, JPA went through another equipment upgrade. I know, toys for the boys ... but my excuse is that I really, really need to keep up with the state of the art. Honest. Anyway, as a result, I ended up with even more unwanted old kit than before, even after I'd re-built one of the PCs for Linux, and the loft was getting full. In fact, Dell (bless them) made things worse by throwing in a couple of free printers that I didn't need.

Now I don't really like the idea of just throwing the stuff in a skip. I'd much rather find some good cause to give it to - which leaves the question of how to find the lucky recipients. The problem is that most recycling organisations only deal in large quantities, and smaller operations don't get a look-in. However, after a trawl on the net, I found donate a PC, which is just the kind of thing that the net is really good at. It's a kind of broking service to match small equipment donors with small charitable organisations, and it's amazingly effective. All you need to do is put up a list of what you've got to get rid of, and wait for people to get in touch. I got three responses within a week.

For the record, The Studio in Hartlepool got one monitor, Deafblind UK got two PCs, three monitors and all sorts of other stuff that happened to be lying around, and DHIVERSE got Dell's free printers.

The point of all of this isn't to brag about how much I've done for charity - after all, it didn't cost me a penny, and I've cleared a lot of space as a result. All I want to do is publicise this excellent site, and encourage anyone reading this to make use of it!

Now - is there anyone out there who's interested in several crates' full of complimentary copies of obsolete Wrox Press books?
